Lately I have been entering into a new phase of motherhood. Instead of trying to find a few moments to myself in the midst of the little babe craziness I find myself with a quickly becoming independent almost toddler. She no longer needs me to perform her most basic functions, no longer needs me to nurse her every three hours and momma is not the only person she runs to when she has a boo-boo or is ready for naps. I am torn between wanting to spend every second of the day watching her every experience and struggling with my happiness at having more time for me and my husband. I think multiple times through the day is she not needing me so much because I am spending more time away from her? Is she just growing? How much of this change is me changing and how much her? These days find me both super happy to see my babe growing, to see her independence but also worried about not being a good mother. Motherhood is such a rollercoaster....

The love, care and attention spent on the color ways are simply delicious and when combined with their soft drape makes for a yarn combination that I will continue to use for many years. I have had the pleasure to visit the Wollmeise shop in Pfaffenhofen, Germany several times over the years and am never disappointed by my trip. Something about being surrounded by so many colors at once breeds artistic inspiration and there are little touches of the sense of humor of the company and artists everywhere in the store, including their bathroom!

Whenever I purchase Wollmeise yarn I know I need to pick the perfect pattern. A pattern that allows for a nice drape to showcase the yarn but also a pattern with detail to showcase it colors and texture. I have numerous patterns that I have favorited on Ravelry just for this purchase. This Drops Design pattern has been a favorite for a number of years. I love the simplicity of construction including the uncomplicated lace pattern and sideway short rows. I began the pattern while Miss Charlotte was only a few months old and our little family was visiting friends and family in our old home of Stuttgart, Germany.

I find it strange that even months later many knitters can remember all the details of their project. I remember the emotions when buying the yarn, my thoughts on starting the project and all the places where I carefully completed the stitches. The pattern was cast on during a sunny day, in an attic room in Stuttgart during May. I remember thinking I should make the largest size possible as I always dread creating a project for my daughter and then letting it hibernate so long it that it will no longer fit.

I remember reminding myself as I knitted to think of how much I loved my daughter and all the babies after her who would wear the sweater. I found myself thinking of the man or woman who designed the pattern, dyed the yarn and perhaps most importantly the many women in my family who spent time knitting little garments for all the babies who came before me in my family. I remember praying for them and praying for Charlotte. I remember dreaming about what my own ancestors may have dreamed about while they knitted their own wool masterpieces. I dreamed of Charlotte seeing this sweater as an adult and feeling the love and prayers her momma knitted into each stitch. This is why I love knitting, I love how it connects us to the past and to the future. I love the time for reflection and calm it gives during this busy life so many of us lead.

This sweater was knitted during a warm vacation day, a late night watching tv with my husband, a train ride downtown D.C. for a work meeting, and playdates sitting next to Charlotte while she crawled and played and later while she walked. It will keep her warm in the winter and in the summer and fills me with joy to see her wear it. Reading these words reminds me of a love letter written to a sweater, a silly concept. In reality this is a love letter to my daughter. It is a reminder for me and to her future self to take time to pause, create, reflect and love. I hope she feels this deep love even now as a wee one wearing her momma's knitted love.
As we talked about her love of the city I immediately began remembering my last trip to Rome. The taste of gelato, fresh watermelon and zuchini blossoms stuffed with artisan cheese and meats. The quest for an out of season jerusalem artichoke prepared as they only do in Rome. Of course, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets behind scenes of ancient faded ruins. The time spent with good friends and my dear husband. To Rome with love!
Are you a fan of macarons? Are you planning a trip to Washington D.C.? Or simply a local looking for the best macaron experience this side of the Atlantic? My sisters and mom decided that a girls date was a necessity and what is a girl date without a dessert experience and coffee?
If you are visiting the Washington D.C. area, or like me live within driving or train distance you need to take the time to try out this local business! Our favorite thing to do is to pick up several macarons, then walk next door to the little market Dean & DeLuca to pick up a yummy latte and sit in the outdoor patio. WARNING: Entering Dean & DeLuca may cause you to spend money on various kitchen items and treats that you never knew you needed!
Macarons are being called the next cupcake craze and it is easy to look in a glass window and become caught up in what I call the 'sugar image.' There have been many times when I purchase a macaron only to bite into it and realize that it is too dry, the almonds are not ground to the right consistency or it dissolves into a mushy mess of dampness....yuck. I have high standards and have done my macaron research. I know the right humidity, temperature and ingredient quality to use and I do not like to be disappointed. My favorite places to find macaroons are Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium so it was a treat to find Olivia Macaron in my new home here in Washington D.C. If you are interested in learning more about the fine craft of macaroons check out this class on Craftsy.com.
Yet here is my tiny lady, wearing her Beaufort Bonnet and sweet smocked dress at the pumpkin patch. I can remember dreaming of little dresses like these, and feeling a little jealous of the pretty baby girls in their bonnets. For over a year now I have been following Rachel, from the blog 'Stitched in Color' on her journey to have a baby. I read her posts about her hope to become pregnant when I was hoping to become pregnant. When I became pregnant I thought of her and prayed for her to have the new little one she wrote about desperately wanting. I was overjoyed when I read that her little baby was due. I love checking her blog to see the little things she has been making, it keeps me inspired to move forward on my own projects and reminds me of what miracles babies are.
Tonight, just before bed I checked her blog to see if her little girl Eleni had arrived and she had! Unfortunately due to still unknown complications little Eleni was born with major medical issues. You can read more about Eleni and Rachel's journey here.
As I sit here with tears pouring down my face, praying for this woman I have never met, nor even talked to I am amazed at how this God works in the world.

This little girl Eleni, who has only been alive for a few hours, has touched so many people just by existing. We have read the words of her mothers heart, and have seen the pictures of her love manifested for this little baby girl. For such a little life, her life has been so amazing. She has a special purpose in God's plan, and her little life has touched mine and made it richer for knowing her. All my heart and prayers go to her family.

If you are interested in helping Eleni's family they have a benefit action, "Action for Eleni" starting 14 March which you can find here. Jodi at Tales of Cloth is also making a 'love quilt' for Eleni if you would like to donate a little hexie flower.

The little details on a project are often what makes it stand out, and brings life to it. The picture above shows what a few simple stitches can do to bring out the eyes on a cut n sew doll by Stacy Iest Hsu via Spoonflower. The eyelash on the left is more pronounced and calls your attention to that part of the doll face. To learn how to embroider your own doll eyelashes, read on!

Step 1: Back stitch to the top of the eyelash and then insert your needle at the eyelash base.

Step 2: Insert the needle at the top of the eyelash, but don't pull the loop of thread all the way through to complete the stitch. Leave a little loop above the fabric as seen below.

Step 3: Insert needle up within the printed eyelash line where you would like the eyelash to curve. I like to use Stacy Iest Hsu' print as a guide for the curve.

Step 4: Insert the needle down in the same spot where you just inserted the needle up, ensuring that it goes over the loop of thread from step 2. Pull gently until the loop of thread is is pulled into place, you may have to work the thread a little to achieve.

Step 5: Back stitch over to the top of the next eyelash and repeat!

Tips on thread: I like to use DMC embroidery thread. I generally use one to two strands depending on how much focus I use on the hair (the example in the pictures uses two strands). I have however seen six strands used on the Stacy Iest Hsu dolls and it looked amazing! Decisions like choosing how many strands of thread to use can be challenging, but these little decisions are what will make your creation unique!

I am so proud of little Miss Charlotte. I cannot believe how much she has grown over the last few months. From learning how to eat to gaining the strength to lift her head I have been there for each precious little milestone. It seems odd but each little thing she has learned I have learned something with her. How to pray, and pray hard. How to be patient even when I am tired, sick or frustrated. How to take delight in the tiniest of lessons, because she is delighting in the tiniest of lessons. It makes me nostalgic even though she is only a few months old and also hopeful and excited for the future. I wonder when she is five, sixteen or thirty will she still get that little eyebrow wrinkle when she set's her mind to a goal? So cheers to Miss Charlotte on another milestone, learning how to sit up by yourself. I am so proud of you.

I placed my first order the other week with spoonflower. I chose several Stacy Iest Hsu Cut and Sew Toys that you can see here (they are awesome!). I kept checking the shipped tracking numbers wondering when my pretty package of fabric would arrive and upon opening it was literally squealing with delight (poor Miss Charlotte, she does not understand her fabric crazed mom!). I immediately placed the fabric into the wash, excited for it to try so I could begin stitching when I noticed a strange white line on one or two of the fabrics. I was so disappointed! I contact spoonflower, dreading working with customer service. I am always stressed by the idea of giving any person or company a complaint. I worried what if they would not offer to replace the items and I would be stuck with the damaged fabric?

I utilized the spoonflower chat service and what a lovely surprise! I worked with their staff member Meredith and in less than 15 minutes she had a new order placed with me along with recommendations for fabric choice changes to prevent the issue from occurring again. She also ensured that I had rush shipping provided so that the fabric would arrive in time for the Creative Chicks Valentine sewing event. I cannot say with enough enthusiasm what a wonderful company they were to work with. There are few companies in the world that make giving a complaint a pleasure! So a big thanks to Meredith and the spoonflower staff, they made my week a brighter by standing by their product and customers.

This is not the normal sequencing of most baby showers, but with an international move for both myself and my mother and a sister changing states within the U.S. having a post baby shower ended up working great! The theme of the party with pink and gold (as you know I love glitter) and Charlotte needed a dress that would meet the party theme.

I have been saving a Narwhal print by Sarah Jane from the Out to Sea collection for a special occasion. I love her fabrics and designs. She brings a beautiful childlike dream quality to her work which makes me think of my own childhood. After selecting the fabric I needed a pattern. I had picked up some Simplicity patterns during a 99 cent Joann Fabrics sale during my last minute baby crafting craze but honestly they did not look that inspiring.

I had been admiring the Geranium dress pattern by Made by Rae for a long time and decided that this would be the perfect pattern to try. It was awesome! I think after trying out a pdf sewing pattern I don't know if I will ever want to go back to a traditional paper sewing pattern. With full scale color images explaining each step and a huge online community of inspiration and trouble shooting guidance it made sewing a breeze and I finished the dress in about 2.5 hours.

I made the 0-3 months size of the pattern for the bodice, but for the skirt the 24 months size. Charlotte is really long! Plus I liked the extra gathers the larger length provided and by creating a deeper hem should be able to make a new bodice to attach to the skirt once she grows out of the 0-3 month size. As you know babies grow fast! I chose not to do the hem stitching and instead blind stitched the inside lining following the pattern tutorial. As I do not have a serger I also used french seaming techniques for all the seams in the skirt to create a beautiful inside finish.

To finish the dress up I added a gold crocheted collar, which was something of a pain to design the pattern! While it was not the most traditional, having a baby shower after the baby arrives it was perfect for our little family. My parents and youngest sister flew in Brazil and another sister from the east coast to meet us at the family homestead in Michigan.
So many people we love came to the party. We had homemade cupcakes, a handmade photo backdrop (seriously can you believe how cool that is??), handmade cupcake toppers and glittered clothespins and tiny chocolate covered cookies. We had games with Brazilian golden grass jewelry prizes. Of course we also had to have a table for friends and family to leave notes and messages for Charlotte along with their instax camera shot!

My five sisters and mother created everything you see even the tassel banners. It rocks to have a large family that loves you and is handy with...well their hands. Charlotte was such a sweetheart at the shower posing, smiling, snuggling and saying hello. These pictures of Charlotte in the Made by Rae Geranium dress I created (see here for details) are some of my favorite pictures of her so far.
To keep me motivated and involved I have purchased the Elise Blaha Cripe Seafoam kit from AC Digitals and am working on Project Life from the computer.

One thing that I have changed in my project life approach is that when I first started I wanted to complete a two page scrapbook spread for every weekā¦this concept is so stressful! I have read so many blogs, and spoken with so many people that become stressed out with the catch-up involved with the weekly project life process. It made me thinkā¦first do I want the stress? second do I want a 104 scrapbook pages every year! As a person who has made the move overseas and the method of weighing your household contents the thought of potentially two albums for each year was daunting.

So I have scaled backā¦taken it easy and am working on my albums when I find time. This helps me to record important things, but more importantly to ENJOY documenting important things.

If you have on checked out the new American Crafts (AC digitals) digital site I would really encourage it,they have really done a great job!

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720367968626916983.post-35446426973922845752013-01-23T07:20:00.000+01:002013-01-23T07:20:00.052+01:00Knitted Storiesā¦The Winter Warmth Shawl
This shawl has been a long time coming. Began earlier this year in March it has seen and experienced a lot of memories with Mr. C. and I this year.

The shawl first began on a shopping trip with a girlfriend in my town Stuttgart Germany. It was purchased in a little store called Wolle & Tee or for us english, Wool & Tea. A sweet little shop where the lady who runs it lives in the back of her store and specializes in wool and tea.

The yarn then followed me to America, where when we were waiting to see if my mother would survive a deadly infection my sister and I found a pattern in a vogue magazine and there in the hospital room the shawl was conceived.

As my mother recovered the shawl then followed me back to Europe, where it visited the Netherlands, Italy and France and in early June the romance of a beach in the little country of Montenegro. The shawl was with me during two friends weddings and during the death of a family member. It comforted me during my illness in the autumn and warmed my lap during cozy nights at home with Mr. C. It visited my work for lunch time knits and while counting itās numerous stitches I made big decisions about my life.

The night it was finished was the night before I left Germany to head to the states for my surgery and I quickly blocked it (for those non-knitters blocking is the final step of the knit process). The idea of leaving it alone in Germany while I started a new adventure was unsupportable.

Now the shawl covers me as I write this and as I think about the shawlās story. I think about how much bigger the story is than even my version, recorded here on my blog. I think of the yarn maker, the pattern maker. I think of the future stories of the shawl. How it will follow me on more life adventures, how it will hopefully warm Mr. C and mine babies when they are a little and where it as brides.

I remember a piece of knitted lace first seen as a young girl of eight in my Auntās house and was told it was knitted by one of my German ancestors long ago. I hope that someday this shawl will be in a future generations house and a young girl or boy will be told the same thing of this winter warmth shawl.

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720367968626916983.post-22797962180505704422013-01-21T20:16:00.001+01:002013-01-21T20:16:07.008+01:00Braveā¦
The little necklace below made by my mother has been one of my mascots during this last fall and winter while preparing for surgery. Some might say that spending 6 weeks in bed rest is a frightening concept but I am trying to look at the positiveā¦perhaps a six week vacation? Even with the pain I must say that having nothing but exercises on my schedule is a relaxing prospect.

Over the next few weeks I would like to share more of my surgery, more of the details that I am recording in my recovery journal but for now I am focused on sharing happier things, like finally having an instagram app on my phone! You may find yourself horrifyingly sick of instagram photos over the next few weeks but I am still in love. Check out my happy update below.

One last instagram photo that I cannot resist sharing is my view from the hospital bed of my room. Documenting pain is hard. This year was particularly rough my corner of the world, as you may have noticed my posts on the blog were greatly reduced.

Writing during pain is exhaustingā¦documenting your thoughts and feelings can sometimes at first glance seem depressing. You think, āI am living pain! Why would I want to take moments when I feel good to write and recollect about it?ā

Many of us who documentā¦document for posterity. We want to recollect and share our lives with others. For myself, I want this sharing to include the things that tore at meā¦that reduced me to my lowest self, that brought me painā¦because this type of documentation is the real youā¦not the pretty versionā¦not the happy versionā¦this real version of you is the version that others can identify with, emphasize with and learn with.

This Tuesday I will undergo my PAO surgery on my left hip and I am ready. I have created my journal, placed my favorite smash book pen in the hospital bag and am ready to begin recording one of the more painfulā¦but hopefully in the long-term joyous occasions of my life.

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720367968626916983.post-79099764903033056432012-11-08T20:09:00.000+01:002012-11-10T20:11:23.601+01:00Day 8: Gratitude Project
Lush Bath Bombs and Melts. Lately soaking in Epsom salts is making my muscles feel sooo much better. When I first began having problems with gluten, sugar and refined flours I thought my yummy food days might be over, but Kelly at Spunky Coconut opened a whole new world of cooking to me. Cakes, cookies, pies and breads and so healthy. I find that many gluten free recipes seem to substitute refined wheat flour with refined rice flourā¦which in my mind is not much better. This is not so on the spunky coconut site! My recipe made today? Butternut squash pudding with sweet potato as a substitute ingredientā¦so yummy!

My favorite recipes:

Clementine Cupcakes with Frosting

Gluten-Free Marble Cake

Vanilla Bean Cake Grain-Free, Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free

Frozen Sunbutter Fudge

Can you tell that I am girl who likes her sweets? I grew up with a daddy who was and still is the handiest man I know. I can remember growing up and feeling bad for other kids whose dad was not a handy superman. I was never worried about my old cars in college, broken washer machines, lawn mowers, dry wall patching you name it dad is always willing to try to fix itā¦even if sometimes a few choice words are said!

As our lazy Sunday passed today, I called my dad to sing him happy birthday and let him know how much I love him. I looked over at Mr. C. while singing to see him working on our new kitchen cabinets and could only think how blessed I am to have two such handy men who love me.

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720367968626916983.post-71211828564778921462012-11-03T13:44:00.000+01:002012-11-10T20:13:38.774+01:00Day 3: Gratitude Project
Today I am thankful for meeting new friends. Moving is always a little scary, but especially moving to another country. I love how each month we meet more people, and make more connections. A really awesome part of the day? The surgeonās amazing mustacheā¦think waxed handle bar with whiskers! I wanted to sneak a picture to share, but did not want to be rude!

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1720367968626916983.post-77570517006684359412012-11-01T13:52:00.000+01:002012-11-09T10:24:55.551+01:00Day 1: Gratitude Project
My mom. She makes me laugh, makes me feel secure and loved and is one of my best friends. Yesterday she faced her fears and had a complicated surgery performed. This was an awesome undertaking because earlier this spring a similar surgery was performed, and we almost lost her. Talking with her and laughing this year is a large part of why I decided to work on the Gratitude Project this month.

Image credit: Liv in the Moment Photography

Learning from her example, and remembering to treasure our family and loved ones while we are together. I am so thankful that she is here with me today, and that her surgery was successful. What a great way to begin my thanksgiving month.

Katie Cavanaughhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10475074339747627234noreply@blogger.com0
